My wife has been a project-fiend long before I got into this crafting world. Most recently she’s learned how to make brooms from scratch. After her initial workshop with a local witch/broommaker (true story…awesome lady), she decided to make brooms for our boys and one for my shop.

All three of her boys LOVE our new brooms. (Almost as much as we enjoyed playing in 80 degree weather on the spring equinox!)

To start this batch, we collected sticks on a nearby trail, removed the pokey bits with chisels and planes, and roughed them to a comfy shape and length with a hatchet, drawknife, and spokeshaves. I think she’s better with the drawknife than I am!

Then, to make the actual broom part, Breanna does her magic: First she soaks “broom corn” in boiling water for 30 minutes until soft, then uses a foot treadle to pull the cordage tight as she binds the cor…
